The University of Cyprus
The Stelios Ioannu library and learning resource centre, Nicosia, Cyprus takes the form of an artificial hill beneath which is the five floor library (basement, ground floor and three floors) covering a total area of approximately 15,700 m2. The project was designed by the famous French architect Jean Nouvel and is named after the Greek Cypriot industrialist Stelios Ioannou. Due to its particular architectural character the project is expected to become a landmark and place Cyprus on the world map of architecture
Demco Interiors was commissioned to design, manufacture and install the innovative, unique designed library shelving over the five floors of the building. The volume of shelving across all floors offers uniformity and familiarity creating an intuitive space for students. This design offers clarity and orientation to minimise the ‘where is’ and ‘how can I go to questions’.
The shelving will house 1 million printed volumes, over 30,000 electronic journal titles and 150 databases and include over 900 study places equipped with the latest technology.
Demco’s world renowned steel library shelving – Cantilibra – was especially manufactured to incorporate unique features including a 25mm flat front profile shelf, a European styled square bracket and integrated end panel lightboxes. A combination of island and single sided, grey steel shelving bays are clad in white with additional feature LED lighting suspended into the framework across all the bays.
