University of Kent

The redevelopment of this busy University Library has created a leading 21st century facility for students at the centre of the Canterbury Campus. The project comprises a new extension and extensive refurbishment joining up the original four blocks merging key services and creating new study zones for quiet or group study with furniture and spaces to suit all study styles. Additional space includes six new seminar rooms and two new digital classrooms as well as the Templeman Lecture Theatre.

Demco was commissioned to space plan and reconfigure a section of the existing library shelving as well as design manufacture and install brand new shelving to create a consistent look and feel throughout the library space. The old and new shelving was framed in oak finish cladding for a traditional look and brought bang up to date with integrated lighting. The Demco teams designed and manufactured canopy units to conceal the lighting electrics and combine the warmth of wood at the same time as shining a light on a vast stock of books and journals.

The library has been shortlisted in the ‘Medium and Large Libraries’ category SCONUL Library Design Awards 2019 which showcase and celebrate the very best in recent academic library design in the UK and Ireland.
