Sustainable design for a sustainable future

It’s important for us as a growing business to establish and maintain a responsible supply chain and so it’s interesting to see Camira introduce a new, sustainable, fabric range called Oceanic. The company’s From Waste to Weave initiative sees them partnering with the SEAQUAL Initiative, working to combat marine plastic pollution and achieve a waste free environment. Woven using SEQUAL yarn, for every 2kgs (4 metres) of Oceanic fabric sold, 9kg of waste is removed from the ocean and each metre of Oceanic contains the equivalent of 26 plastic bottles!

The SEAQUAL Initiative is a unique collaborative model involving NGOs, Fishermen, Researchers, Scientists, Authorities and Private Stakeholders to clean the Ocean floor and surface, rivers and estuaries, beaches and coastlines. A very exciting and interesting initiative and we look forward to learning more about Oceanic.  In the meantime check out Camira’s video that  tells you a bit more about their #seasickofplastic campaign.

Another of our manufacturing suppliers, Orangebox, is a member of the steering committee of the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP) run by the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA). As it says on their website ‘we take our environmental responsibility seriously and have a zero to landfill policy, with all waste being sorted and diverted down the relevant recycling streams’.

Reducing transport miles, using local suppliers and getting rid of waste sustainability are part of our commitment to supporting environmental standards and, as part of the design process, we’re always recommending ways to recycle or up cycle existing furnishings.

When it comes to manufacturing our Cantilibra steel library shelving is engineered from high quality, recycled steel that comes from the process of stamping metal sheets to create parts used in automotive products such as car doors. It’s manufactured in the UK, saving on transport miles, at our ISO 9001 accredited plant.

In libraries, schools, universities and offices you’ll find Cantilibra shelves still looking good and working hard for twenty, thirty, forty or even more years. Upcycling existing shelving to bring into line with current design trends and different usage has become very popular and our designers can completely transform the look and feel of the existing shelving to suit a brand new scheme.

We are committed to sustainability across our business and it’s an ongoing process for us to look at new ways and means of delivering responsibly for ourselves and to our customers.
