Library Design and Library Myth
A presentation given by Richard Mitchell, Demco Interiors, at this year’s Library Show highlighted the need for library services to listen to their library users if they want to keep their library furnishings and designs relevant.

The presentation focussed on old and new library design myths and how these might still be influencing our attitudes towards library design. Richard suggests that perhaps it is now time for some of these myths to be consigned to Room 101.

“I have worked in the library sector for over 40 years both as a librarian and supplier and it is not surprising that some views and opinions about libraries and library users just stick, whether they are right or not.   If we want to design interiors that are appealing and, more importantly relevant, than we must challenge old held assumptions. Demco, are taking time to talk to library users and making sure we that we are not designing in clichés or for stereotypes”.

Backed up by interviews carried out at a large public library and with accompanying vox pops of library users,  the presentation was enthusiastically received at the Show.  Some older myths include:  The ne’er do well library user; the ever escaping child and the short sighted reader.
